Director of Digital Technology
(Whole School)
Effective Date: 2018-19 (Revised annually)
Line Manager: Principal
Supervisory Responsibility: IT Services, MIS Team and Primary Computing &
Technology Coordinator

The Director of Digital Technology is the School’s key adviser for setting and implementing
the vision and direction of the whole school’s technology strategy. Reporting to the Principal,
the post holder is responsible for providing strategic leadership on all aspects of IT provision
(academic, administrative, financial, pastoral).
The Director of Digital Technology is also responsible for day to day operational coordination
of a range of information systems, technology services, the School’s network and associated
infrastructure, training and support for users.
The Director of Digital Technology is accountable for the development of how technology
supports teaching and learning, the oversight and upkeep of all ICT facilities and computer
network systems within the School, offering a rapid response to ensure all systems are able
to function efficiently, safely and effectively in order to support the delivery of the excellent
teaching, learning and administration.
The Director of Digital Technology will work closely with the Leadership Team to lead, plan
and implement the strategic development of technology within the School.


Main Responsibilities, Purpose and Key Roles of the Job

Strategic

Provide strategic leadership on all aspects of teaching and non-teaching technology
provision (academic, administrative, financial, pastoral and technical).
Lead the development, implementation and termly review of an effective technology
strategy to facilitate excellence in teaching and learning and the whole school
technology infrastructure.
Ensure that the technology strategy supports the implementation of the whole school
strategic vision.
Develop the use of technology in all academic, administrative and support areas.
Oversee the provision of high quality technology, based on users (students, teaching
and non-teaching and parental) need.
Manage strategic technological developments in line with the School’s technology
strategy.
Work closely with the Network Manager to develop medium and long term
coordinated planning based on the school’s educational objectives.
Attend meetings and report to the Leadership team where required.

Operational
Oversee all aspects of the School network, data services, and technical support.
Lead and manage the use, maintenance and development of the School’s
Management Information System (MIS) to support teaching, learning and
administration.
Liaise closely with the Network Manager to ensure Information Systems function
effectively and support software amendment and upgrades.
Encourage innovative use of computing and technology to support and extend the
curriculum.
Liaise closely with the Heads of School in the development and implementation of
academic requirements.
Attend and organise Technology Management group meetings to facilitate
improvements in teaching, learning and administration through the innovative and
effective use of technology.
Chair the Technology Working Group (TWG) meetings as required.
Report progress with agreed strategy and objectives and make recommendations to
the Governors’ Technology Development Sub-Committee (Tech DC).
Direct and oversee all aspects of the whole school ICT budget process; control and
allocate budgets within formal deadlines, drive capital and revenue budget decisions
forward and prepare new bids to support the implementation of the technology
strategy.
In conjunction with the Deputy Heads (Academic) and Deputy Heads (Pastoral),
maintain policies, procedures and standards for the safe use (including e-safety),
management (including data protection) and disposal of data and ICT resource.
Ensure compliance of all technology related policies and procedures at the School.
Manage contracts and external suppliers of technology.
Advise the Leadership Team on the development of Information Systems strategy for
Finance, Human Resources, Wellbeing, and other non-teaching areas.
Line manage the technology team, providing advice and support relating to their
delegated responsibilities.
Liaise closely with the Operations Manager on the recruitment and appointment of
technology support staff.
Liaise closely with the Operations Manager for the orientation of new staff;
technology training, set up of logins, and equipment.
Identify technology training needs and implement professional development for staff
as appropriate and required.

Communications & Marketing

Work closely with the Communications Manager to ensure internal and external
communication channels work and are developed effectively including, but not limited
to, the school website, Portal and emails.
Support the Communications Manager with technology aspects of running the school
website.
Ensure an ‘End User’ led approach to all technology matters (academic, technical
and financial).
Work closely with the Heads of School to ensure that parents receive any necessary
information on technology requirements in the classroom.

Professional Development
To undertake appropriate CPD and training in connection with these responsibilities
and personal career prospects

Other
Undertake additional duties that are appropriate to the role as directed by the Principal
/Leadership Team. In pursuance of these responsibilities the Director of Digital Technology
will be expected to have regular meetings with the Extended Leadership Team and middle
managers as necessary.

Factors Ideal Requirements

Educational & Professional Qualifications / Experience


Bachelor's degree in Software Engineering, Computer Science,
Information Technology, Networking, or other relevant degrees.
Experience of working in a similar role such as Head of IT or IT Team
Leader.
Considerable experience in Network management.
Experience of managing and interpreting complex and voluminous data.
Exceptional technical knowledge of network and PC operating systems
in particular for managing and configuring authority and school-wide
LANs, WANs, WLANs
Excellent numeracy/literacy skills.
Excellent communication and presentation skills.
Fluent in English; reading, speaking and writing.
Experience of working in an education environment.

Skills and Knowledge

Willingness to work flexibly when required.
Understanding of client/server architecture.
In depth knowledge of computer systems/networks and a range of
software applications.
Full working knowledge of relevant polices/codes of practice/legislation.
Understanding of health, safety and welfare regulations and ***t
practice affecting IT.
Understanding of Data Protection requirements.
Hands-on experience troubleshooting hardware such as servers,
routers, bridges, switches, hubs, modems, network interface cards.
Excellent knowledge of current protocols and standards.
Knowledge and understanding of telecommunications principles.
Ability to analyse data accurately.
Ability to identify own and others’ training & development needs and
cooperate with appropriate individuals to address these.
